KSRA has participated in events with the Justin Corbet Memorial Shooting Sports Foundation in Topeka, Kansas to promote shooting sports, and we appreciate this opportunity to inform KSRA members about the Foundation.
The Foundation started in 2003 in honor of Justin Corbet who died in a tragic motorcycle accident at the age of 23. Justin loved the outdoors and his friends wanted to preserve his memory. The Foundation is a nonprofit 501(C3) organization formed to provide leadership, support and financial support to qualified programs and individuals in various shooting sports. The principle goal is to provide funding for women, youth and family oriented shooting and outdoors educational activities. To date the Foundation has awarded more than $170,000 in grants to 105 recipients impacting over 40,000 youth and women across the country.
In 2010 the Foundation wanted to do something to give back to the community for its support and started the “Youth in the Outdoors Day.” This is a free event for children accompanied by a parent or adult. This event held on the first Saturday in June at Ravenwood Lodge in Topeka includes laser shoot, bow and arrow, shotgun, blackpowder shooting, knife and hawk throw, horticulture, turkey calling, kite flying, fur harvesters and many other activities. Lunch is provided and more than a few “grandpas and grandmas” have some fun as well. KSRA was a participant in 2016 with an air pistol booth.
The primary source of funding comes from a 50 target sporting clay shoot plus sponsors and donors. All are recognized on handouts given to shooters. There are 4 levels of sponsors: Title Sponsor $5,000; Top Gun $1,000; Display $500; Shoot $250; and Donors. 2017 had 15 Top Gun Sponsors with some over $1,000; 10 Display Sponsors, 33 Shoot Sponsors and 40 Donors. Sponsors are recognized on the course with a sign and listing on the shoot participant handout and Foundation web site. For the last two years KSRA has been a Top Gun Sponsor including Life Memberships to KSRA.
The shoot is on Friday PM and Saturday AM. Biscuits and gravy are served on Saturday morning from 8 AM to 9 AM and lunch from 11 AM to 1PM. Trophies are awarded for Men’s, Lady’s and Juniors 16 and under. Top Gun Winner name is inscribed on permanent trophy at Ravenwood Lodge. Prizes are awards by lucky draw of tickets from buckets on prize tables. Shooters get one ticket for every target broken and drop tickets in buckets of their choice, and need not be present to win. There were more than 100 buckets to choose from at the 2017 shoot.
To date the Foundation has provided grants to a wide variety of recipients such as 4-H groups in 22 Kansas counties and in other states. A lengthy list of recipients and grant applications can be pulled up on the website (www.justincorbetfoundation.org). The grants are announced at the annual Youth in the Outdoors Day which will be June 2, 2018. A short form is available for amounts up to $500 that can be received during the year by approval of the Board. The grant application for larger sums must be received by mid-May.
The Justin Corbet Board welcomes any additional presenters at the Youth in the Outdoors Day and participants and donors at the September fundraiser as a great way to share their interest with others.
